Then, up went his staff, as if he was about to strike the speaker. He would have done so but for an interruption. Nettie sprung. forward and caught bis arm, ber eyes flashing fire. “ Never again dare to attempt to strike this man !” she said, -- showing her brilliant teeth. Boker shrunk back, completely cowed, That same day a visitor came to the rendezvous. It was the masked man—Wilkins, He drew Malo aside. For a long time the two conyersed in a low tone, When they separated, and Wilkins left the retreat, Nettie slyly opened the door of the cell where the prisoners bad first been confined. Some previous conyulsion of nature had overturned the rocks, and piled them in grotesque masses, with openings leading in and out, forming a numberof curious caverns, both large and small.
