Wilson immediately found himself surrounded by friends, the young farmers of the neighborhood, with Captain Hood at their head, and Alice Ryeburn on horseback among them, Hurried questions and explanations ensued, and then Cap- tain Hood and his party proceeded to attend to the business that had brought them there. They first examined the bodies of the slain. “You were right, Alice,” said Captain Hood. “ These are not white men, but Indians.” “ What did she suppose they were ?” asked Wilson. “ Her father believed that his house was attacked by Simon Atlee and some other men disguised as Indians, but she thought Aifferently, because she met two unmistakable Indians as she was going to the fort.” “Her father was not mistaken. These are red-skins, to be sure, and they are not the first that I have seen since yester- day; but the house was attacked by the Atlees and two other men, one of whom I have just settled. While they were down here, their own house was entered by Indians, and the negro man was killed, but Kate and ag aha Garnet escaped with the boy and are safe.” “Where are the Atlees now ?” asked Captain Hood. “The house seems to be quiet and in the usual condition.” “ They are in the house, I believe, but I think they will do no more harm, for Kate came down with me, and she has . gone in to them.” “No harm !” exclaimed Alice. “Who knows how many have been murdered ?” “None of your people have been murdered, Miss’ Alice. They are all safe.” “All safe! Does that look like safety? See, the house is on fire !” Tn fact, at that moment flames and smoke began to burst Out of the side of the house, and a negro woman could be seen at the upper window, beckoning to the rescuers. “Gentlemen, half a dozen of you must scour the woods and hunt out the red-skins,” said Captain Hood. “Come, Wilson, ae _ us ‘g0 to the house.” es ee a 5, OL ee comicboo <S.com .
