The weather was as cold as it could well be in January, and he was not over-thickly clad, having thrown off his cloak in the cabin. He knew that the old man had a rough sort of “affection for his offspring, and that Caleb was his eld- — est born and favorite son. The old man noted his hesitation, and reaching his side by two long strides, grasped his arm. “ What has come to the boy?” he said. ‘“ Why do you lurk about like a thief?” | “The dour is closed; I can not sat in,” said: aGuy. “Ts Caleb there? . Where lies he?” Guy exziained the matter as well as he could, interrupted by the muttered curses of the old man.
