SLEEVE OF CARE desire to get away from it all? But he had a little money, some clothes, other things, and there was no hurry. He could always go. Tomorrow, the next day, the day after. There was no need for him just to vanish. Not yet. He stepped from the kerb, his long legs thrusting at the concrete as he strode across the road, weaving expertly between traffic. One step, two; thrée: 322: . And walked into darkness. And walked into light again. And stopped. The street had vanished. The cars, the people, the drone of traffic, and the whisper of pedestrians. All gone. Instead... A smooth floor. A tremen- dous sheet of blinding light facing him, soaring up from the floor to a fantastic height, brilliant with a cold, blue- white glow. Behind him an- other wall, tremendous like the first, smaller ones at each side, and above... He looked up, then down, 61 blinking as his eyes flashed to the retinal after-image of glowing suns and _ glaring light. Almost he felt his skin prickle to that fierce glow, and as he moved in semi-blindness, his foot struck something on the floor and he stumbled, falling heavily to his knees. A man snarled at him. A negro, black as coal with red- rimmed eyes and features haggard with brute incom- prehension. He was naked, streaked with filth, his skin puckered with fantastic scars, and he rested on a bed of his own making. Sam gulped and moved away. It began to register then, and within his skull he felt his mind begin to twist with screaming questions. He had been walking across a crowded street, one moment safe and among familiar things; the NeXt: 7 Madness? He knew that it wasn’t that. Whatever had happened, he hadn’t suddenly gone stark, staring insane. This floor comiclooks.corn
