MARCH OF SCIENCE NEWS OF SOME RECENT SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERIES C. DE JAGER, of Sterrewacht Sonnenborgh, Utrecht, de- cided to measure the width of certain hydrogen lines in the solar spectrum. As a result of what he found it is possible that present ideas of the struc- ture of the photosphere will have to be greatly modified. Jager discovered that the lines were much wider than would have been expected from the application of cer- tain statistical calculations based on the effect of ions surrounding emitting elec- trons. Since it is not possible to ascribe the widening to atomic processes, the explana- tion must be that there is a process going on in the photo- sphere that is not reproducible in the laboratory. From results he obtained by constructing models of the solar photosphere, Jager be- lieves that the widening is 128 caused by microturbulence in. this layer of the Sun. * THE PERIODIC TABLE Of ele- ments can now be set out with a nice round number, for.
