THIEVES’ he paced Barry. “ Your whole story sounds like a pipe dream. “Now come across! Tell me why you killed that cop. Where did you kill him? What did you do with his uniform cap and coat? Come on now, I’m tired of this. You can’t make a sucker out of me.” Barry was not sure, but he thought he detected a note of uncertainty be- hind the detective’s blustering. 3 “ Call Hamilton,” he said pleasantly. “Tf I was going to hide a body would I hide it in the house where [ was staying? Would I conceal such a damnable piece of evidence as that pistol is in my own room? “Be reasonable. And, by the way, how can you be so positive this police- man was killed by a weapon of the same caliber. “T have seen plenty of gunshot wounds. I know I could not say posi- tively what weapon killed a man.” “There are plenty of men in that neighborhood who would kill a police- man. Why don’t you look for some of them?” * Don’t you try to tell me how to handle my job,” warned the detective. “Go on now, be a good fellow and call Hamilton.” “ Hey, Rogan! You fellows come back here and watch this bird. You know what to do if he makes a move. I’ve got some telephoning to do.” A few hours later Barry, who was slumped in his chair and was half doz- ing was aroused by a rude shaking. MARKET. 633 “Come on, we’re going to leave you in a cell for awhile.” This was a man in plain clothes he had not seen before. As he passed down the corridor to a row of cells’ half a dozen uniformed policemen crowded forward. “That’s him,” declared one of them. He suddenly struck at Barry with his night stick. He was young and vigorous. If the blow had landed it might have fractured Barry’s skull, but the policeman’s arm was caught in mid flight by one of his companions and then several of the others seized him. “That,” identified the detective who now had Barry in custody, “is the brother of the officer you knocked off.” He placed his hand between Barry’s shoulders and shoved with all his strength. Instead of being thrown forward, however, Barry set his mus- cles, threw out his hands and braced himself against the iron frame of the cell door. “Do you want me to go in here?” he said. “Tl go in if that is on the program, but I’d like to bet you all the money I’ve got against a month of your pay that I can lick you with my fists, you big: stiff.” “When they cook you up at Sing Sing about six weeks from now,” re- torted the detective, “Ill be there to tell you good-by— “God! How I'd like to kick you in the belly, but the chief says we're to save you for another time, you filthy cop killer!’ TO BE CONTINUED NEXT WEEK (e(0) L0\(e Yo) (E@)
