At eight bells, when the welcome call “ knock off all work!” sounded, most of the members of the crew searched for shady spots on the port side of the vessel and stretched out for a nap. The Falcon, having just been put into service in the Pacific fleet, was making a practice run to Honolulu. She was living up to her builders’ specifications and plowing jauntily through the placid waters at a speed of better than twenty-two knots. Andy Bevans and his buddy, Fred Hankins, returning from below, where they had gone for cigarettes, found the choice spots on the deck occupied. As they rounded one of the gun tur- A BLAZING tropical sun had ren- rets, Andy stumbled against a pair of outstretched legs and fell forward onto his face with a thud. Sam Black, nicknamed ‘“Blacky,” angry at being disturbed during his well-earned rest, sprang up just as Andy got to his feet. “What’s the idea, runt?” he de- manded, menacingly. “Who’s a runt?” growled Andy. “You are!’ returned Blacky, doubling up his fists. Before Hankins could interfere, the two men were engaged in a rough and tumble melée. Blacky, tall and~wiry, had the ad- vantage over his short, plump adver- sary.
