Then, presently, a giant form emerged, crawling out of the surf. Soundlessly and slowly, but very steadily, it moved, crablike, toward the girl. Soon it was beside her. The girl spoke low: “You all right, big boy?” “Be quiet, and very still,” cau- tioned Little John. ‘‘Keep your face well down in the sand, or—”’ Again the machine gun sang out. The sand just beyond them, and around about them, spurted up as bullets hit. Then, once more, there was quiet.
