As may be supposed, her fortune at meeting with Don Diego Christoval had cheered her considerably, not merely because he was the means of rescuing her from the power of the Catalan bandits, but likewise because he had so gener- ously volunteered to interest himself to the utmost of his power in the cause of Ned Russell. Kate therefore pursued her journey with brighter hopes than she had previously entertained; and what with the good offices of Count Christoval at Barcelona, and the succour which she expected to receive from the Marquis of Villebelle at Madrid, the heroic young woman was very far from despairing of ulti- mate success in saving her lover’s life.
