CHAPTER XXIII. HELENA'S SECRET AND HAZEL’S INJURY. Helena crushed the paper in her hand with angry vehemence, then, after darting a quick glance around, to see that no one was near to observe her, she slipped out of the house, passed swiftly down the steps, and walked with a quick, firm tread toward the summer-house. The night was dark and cloudy; not a star was visible, and it was difficult to distinguish objects two yards away. Helena shivered slightly, and glanced about her with something of fear and dread, as she passed over the lawn to obey the imperative summons that she had received.
