He dropped into a chair, and with his elbows on his knees, leaned his face moodily upon his hands. Presently Vashti left the room, followed by Nora; Mar- gery Gresham was pacing the corridor, and looking inex- pressibly relieved at Vashti’sappearance. Philip and Frank sat silent some minutes, and then the former said, with a nervous, forced laugh : ‘“We’re on the broad road to destruction, Philip.
