Go up to Madge, poor, dear child!” The captain went up stairs to Madge’s little bed-chamber. She lay in bed, looking pale and death-like, a long paper document in her hand. ‘Well, my dear, I’m sorry to see you looking so white. What has happened to trouble you?” «Dear Captain Lyle, you saved my life, and have been like a father to me——” «Yes, dear—that is all right.” ‘Well, you will defend me now, will you not?” ‘‘Defend you?
