He began to think he had been on a false scent. He had also received rather sharp letters from the home- office, requesting an account of his progress. He did not feel inclined to write home and tell them the true state of the case—that he was not making any. After reading Mrs. Hall’s letter, he felt disposed to think that these people had nothing to do with ae robbery of the vault.
