"We will be in time, dear,” he said, quietly, and she did not question it, scarcely heard the more kindly name, though the horror somehow fell away from her heart and a silence and full despair mingled with an indefinite hope rested upon her. He was strong, he was her friend, he ‘would help her, and he could. Mrs. Allen, watching, saw the whole through her half closed lids, and a gleam came into her eyes, though not a muscle of her face changed or moved in the ghostly flare of the night lamps above her head.
