A SOCIAL METEOR. 169 “I may come to see you soon ?” _ She dropped her eyes. “Do you wish to ?” she asked, after a moment’s hesitation. | ‘What a question !”’ “Very well. Come whenever you like, only be sure and let me know beforehand. Write to me, anyway, won’t you? I shall be so uneasy until I hear from you.” “T will; but why should you be worried? You may depend upon it, my feelings toward you will never change,” he answered, reassuringly. “Ah,” she responded, shaking her head sadly, “you can’t tell. Things look very different in broad daylight from what they do at night, and I don’t see how you can care for me after this.” When she returned to Ray, after bidding the two men good-night, she found her with her head thrown back, half asleep. “Are you ready to go to your room now?” she asked, shaking her a little to rouse her. “What do you want? Go away and let me alone,’ answered Ray, crossly. “But you can’t stay here all night, you know.” “Why can’t I? Go to bed yourself, if you like, but ’m going to stay here,” (EONNIE KOOKS (E@)
