This model of mothers-in-law remarked to her daughter that they must not fail to be at Pomeyras on the anniversary of Godefroid’s death. “Assuredly,” said the young widow, astonished at this pious respect for the dead. “It is our duty to assist at the service.” They left the next day, and Jenny found herself once more in the house where she was born; this time she had no feeling of joy.
