Why had he been brought back to this earth to long unceasingly for the unattain- able? And yet it was her wish. She had relented. To be even the object of her pity was something. If it was her wish that he should live, what was he that he should dare to oppose it? And yet how much better it would have been for him if he had been left to die? Hewas young yet, and be- fore him stretched an endless vista of sorrowful years. He closed his eyes, as if to shut out the vision of what was before him.
