There was other furniture, too—a big iron chest half concealed under the curtains, and a massive secretary or writing-desk with heavy locks on the drawer. But no thought was given to these things in the excitement. They wanted only Nana Sahib, and recklessly they dragged the furniture about and tore aside the curtains. But this room was as bare as the other. The Hindoo had escaped. A recess at the farther corner of the room was concealed by heavy curtains, and, pulling these away, Guy discovered another door. “No use,” he cried. ‘ You can stop searching. Here is another exit.” They came up andexamined it. Topee held the torch close. “He never went through there,” said Loyd. “ Why, don’t you see it’s fastened on this side.” Loyd was right. The door was held by great iron bolts that were rusted in their sockets, and it was very plain that they had not been drawn for months.
