Then came level ground, and they hurried on faster, stopping frequently to avoid the sharp, dripping petrifica. tions that hung from the low ceiling. Topee halted at a big rock that half blocked the passage. He tossed down the wood and motioned Chauner to drop the helmet. “Now come along me,” he said to Guy in an impressive whisper. He turned the corner of the rock and softly began to ascend the passage beyond, which grew suddenly high and broad, but increased in steep- ness.
