He could hear a trumpet blown from the light- house, as if to encourage them, and was the only one who got hold of his battered horn to send back a response. For a brief space of time he was in the midst of foaming waters. They even washed his deck, but the coaming around the cockpit and the canvas apron he had drawn about him, prevented any drops from entering the boat. ‘Then he passed beyond. Huis boat still rose and fell upon the rollers, but he had gone beyond the bar. All were safe. The wind was in the northwest and blowing a gen- tle sailing breeze.
