Paddling Under Palmettos. 127 said that upon him had fallen the full burden of the trials and sufferings of that night. There was also one present who had seen much of life upon the sea. He did not speak often, but was a good listener. Along the Florida coast he spent much time in shark fishing. No one seemed to know what there was so fascinating to him about the sport. Generally anglers wish to catch a few sharks to say they have done it, but the effort is such hard work that they soon give it up and proceed to more gentle sport. This white-haired old man, however, seemed to love it. He carriedwith him great shark-hooks attached to strong chains and swivels, solid steel grains for spearing the fish, and a great assortment of lines, from a hawser to an ordinary-sized fishing line of Cuttyhunk. It had been suggested that he might be in some peculiar business, such as securing shark oil from the dead fish for some purpose, just as they take it from porpoises for jewelers’ use.
