As the afternoon waned they paddled back dis- consolately to their last night’s harbor, with no progress made. It was discouraging. Worse than this, real trouble stared them in the face, for their fresh water was getting low. Dick had about two gallons, while Archie guessed he had one. This was far from pleasant. Why, it made them thirsty only to think of it. All day they had seen but two boats on the river, and these were scudding before the wind under what Dick called a “goose wing,” being a mere capful of canvas.
