30 Out of the Past. “For my father,’ he answered very low. “Always the same thing—the quest of the impossible. Fame may come to you, as I believe it will, but I doubt if it will make you happy. You will wear your heart out seeking one man in a worldful. Can you not let it rest in peace?” Such a look of wonder and reproach met Benedict’s words that he sighed. “I forget that youth has always the right of it. Its impulse is nearer to nature. The wing of its hopes has not been broken. But come; show me your apartment, tell me your plans. Let me get into the current of it all, so that I may be glad with you.” So saying, Benedict rose and turned quickly toward the gate of the monastery. CORNICE OOOKS.:
