The mist hung like a damp pall over the neigh- boring forest; the broad plain lay veiled and form- less, separated from a patch of land recently cleared by a long row of fir-trees. The moon was pale, no star shone brightly through the gray clouds, which hung in a mass as heavy and threatening as though all the smoke of the cannon used in the war had risen heavenward to utter complaints and lamenta- tions. The wind swept by, tossing the swaying branches, whose gay autumnal foliage whirled down to the damp earth ; the plaintive notes of birds echoed from the neighboring rushes, and died away in a soft echo in the western valley.
