ON THE TRAIL OF GERONIMO. 325 two hundred yards or more away on the plain, with the faces of all turned toward the camp. One of the riders was a rod or so in advance of the others, holding the spotless linen in one hand, and slowly waving it above his head to attract the attention of the troopers. The sight was a strange one indeed, and there could be no mistaking the meaning of the demon- stration. Captain Campereaux smiled as he re- flected that the scheme he had in mind was work- ing so satisfactorily, though he still felt some mis- giving concerning Lieutenant Whitcomb. With- out summoning any companion, the officer spurred his horse forward, fluttering his own handkerchief in front of his face as an answer to the hail of the other. By many the action of the leading officer of the scouts might be considered rash, since the treacher- ous nature of the Apaches rendered it unwise at any time to trust them ; but he had no fears of any- thing of the kind. Tohim the appearance of these warriors with the flag of truce was unquestionable proof that the misfortune that had befallen Gero- nimo’s son was known to his father, who was anx- ious to secure his safety.
