232 ON THE TRAIL OF GERONIMO. As he spoke, every eye was turned in that direction, and the yellow, burning sand was scru- tinized with the closest attention. Since there could be little doubt that some kind of danger threatened, the horses were brought to a stand- still. Apparently the plain in front of them had not been disturbed except by winds and storms for years. There were the little rifts and hillocks into which the sand had been blown by the strong gales that sometimes sweep over every portion of Arizona, but there was nothing more. That is, there seemed to be nothing more; but Joggens, who had never once removed his eyes from the spot where he had observed the curi- ous agitation, saw what seemed to be the end of a stick, projecting afew inches from the sand. At the same time he noticed that back of this ob- ject for several feet the dirt was almost impercep- tibly rounded, as though a mound or grave had been nearly leveled by the weather. Beside that, the careful scrutiny revealed that the ground around the place was marked in the same manner. The hillocks were unmistakably, though faintly, defined. (C(O) nn) € 6)(0)(6) (C(0) mM
