Dick and his friends, carbines in hand, made their way to the roof of the structure, where they lay down, taking care that no one should catch sightof them. A heavy wall of bullet proof plank- ing extended along the edge of the flat roof, having been placed there for the purpose of serving as a screen in just such an emergency as now threat- ened. “ We'll teach them a lesson,” said the lieutenant, “that they won’t forget for the rest of their lives.
