Her house, unlike the majority of those in the Southwest, was made entirely of wood, instead of adobe, the most common building material throughout Mexi- co, Arizona, and New Mexico. News had come to these dwellers in the exposed ranch that Geronimo and his Apaches were on the war-path, and there was no saying when he would pay them a visit. And so it was the most natural thing in the world for the young girl, before seating herself, to stand for a moment, shading her eyes with her hand, and looking searchingly off to the west- ward, where the country was in plain view for miles. She had done the same thing many times, without descrying anything strange, but this time she gave a slight start, for the bright eyes had detected something at last. “ T wonder whether they are Apaches,” she gasp- ed, her heart throbbing faster than was its wont. “T shall soon know,” she added, wheeling on her heel and darting into the house for the glass. 11 (C(O) mM
