Mrs. Studevant knew her child as no one else knew her, appreciated her honest, loyal character, her earnestness, purity, and sincerity, and with this ap- preciation came the knowledge as to the crushing effect that would follow a realization of all that she at that mo- ment dreaded. She feared the lack of the necessary rally- ing power to meet a crisis like the one threatened.
