While speaking, Snail rose from his chair, Bob pouredout athird glass for Mike, who in his cons fusion drank it to the last drop. Bob looked him in the face. The vacant features of Mike sud- denly became animated. His eyelids twinkled ; the veins of his forehead swelled. Seeing this, Bob took the bowl, which was siill half full, and dashed it to pieces on the floor. He has had encugh of it, said Bob, and Turn- buil must not taste it, Snail had hurried to welcome the new-comers. They were Tom Turnbull, Big Charley, Mitchell, and $wo or three more of Captain Paddy’s crew. They were all drunk; but Turnbull was a little less so than the rest, They came into the house, singing, and loaded Peg with curses, by way of salutation. Seats were placed for them reund a table. Tam here with my wife Madge, my jolly boys, said Snail, addressing them, but I cannot ask you to drink with me, because Mike is my brother-in- ~~ law, and we are drinking together.
