THE KING OF THE SCHOOL; OR, WHO WILL WIN? “fT can’t very well, sir, while I am carrying these things,” replied . Harry. | “Can't you? that.” At the same moment, suiting the action to the word, Crawley gave Harry a heavy blow on the face. “Take that, you coward!” said Freddy, who had been gradually coming up all this time, and had overheard the latter part of the conversation. The blow he gave Crawley sent that young bully, who was not prepared for it, sprawling in the gutter. As soon as he looked up and saw who it was had struck the blow, he gathered himself up hastily, and ran off as fast as his legs could carry him. Freddy, after saying a few words to Harry, was about to continue his walk, when suddenly he received a slap that prostrated him. “You young ruffiaa!” exclaimed ‘a eruff voice. I saw you ill-treating that poor boy. J am afraid your mas- ter won’t whack you, so I'll take the liberty of doing it,” : The speaker, a big, powerful man, then proceeded to give several severe punches about the head. “ Let him have it well,” said another voice, the owner of which could not be seen. | Freddy started at the sound, for he thought he knew those tones. | During all this time, Harry had been shouting for the police, and at last a member of the blue coat force made his appearance. " The adversary then immediately left off beating Freddy, and bolted up one of the side-streets. “ What’s the row?” asked the man - Gn blue, as he came up. ‘Webber explained, and demanded that his assailant should instantly be ursued, and taken into custody. “ What’s his name?” was the police- man’s next question. “J dont’ know. How should I?” Then: you can take. 101 - ate said Freddy, rather indignant at bein; thus cross-examined, “You say a man’s been beating of you, which is werry hevident, and you wants me to foller, and take him into custody. How can I do it, onless you tells me who he is ?” “He’s a—a—big man, with black whiskers.” “Well dressed?” « Rather seedy-looking.” ‘¢ There’s many like that about.” “ What’s to be done, then? I to have no redress?” “You must wait till you sees him again, then collar him, and send for the perlice,” said the member of the force, with a grin, as he walked away. ‘Nice advice,” exclaimed Freddy, as he continued his walk towards the school, where, in due course of time, he arrived with two black eyes and a cut on his cheek. He was very quickly surrounded by a crowd of sympathising friends, who in- quired how he had come by such dis- figurements. | Freddy related his adventures. Great indignation was expressed on all sides. About half-an-hour afterwards, another boy came in who had been treated in much the same manner, near the same place. Then came a third. The boys were furious. The seedy individual with black whiskers very evidently had some spite against the school, and was waylaying the boys whenever he had an oppor- tunity. “This must be stopped!” exclaimed Frank Egerton. ‘ Who will go with me?” “J will!” shouted a score of the biggest. “ Come, then,” said Frank. But at that moment the under- masters came round, and sent them all into the house, Am Qe KS Oe CO NOC CO mn
