ae, MY smoke. JI think the wind was blowing in that direction and that was why they closed the door in the first place,” said Miss Allyn. Miss Ellis was leaning out of the window as Miss Allyn spoke, and Dr. Brookes saw that she was anxious about her lover, who was in a second carriage with Orrin Olcott and the two other ladies of the company. ‘Don’t worry about Bert: he is not badly burned,” he said, quietly, “and I don’t believe he ever’ knows his face is scorched. He is so anxious about Marion that he is oblivious to suffering.” | “Dear Bert! He is an angel,’”’ said Miss Ellis, fondly; “only, of course, you mustn’t any of you tell him that I said so.” “T fancy ‘he knows it,” answered Miss Allyn, and, just then, the carriage stopped. They had reached the hotel at which they were stopping. “Now, if she is only here it will be all right,’ said Miss Allyn, as the doctor as- sisted her to alight. “It was a delightful night in spite of the fire. Of course, it would have been different if any one had been injured!” “T hope they will catch the sergeant and punish him,” snapped Miss Ellis, as she fol- lowed her friend, “for, in spite of his fire- works, I think he is a brute, and who knows but he has stolen our darling Marion!” “That is hardly possible,” said Dr. Brookes again. “Kidnapping young women is not one of the habits of United States soldiers; besides, if Marion was unharmed, he would not take her far. She would havesthe whole camp after him if he dared to touch her.” He ran up the steps as he spoke, and was first in the office. “Qh. Dr. Brookes!” gasped Miss Allyn, as he met therm at the door. “Marion is not here,” the doctor said, hus- kily, “and there is not a word to any one of us from her!” CHAPTER X. TO THE RESCUE, Ten minutes later the little group of anx- cae still in the hotel parlor, talking was a terrible mystery—- Teihe gqQnes \ QUEEN. the disappearance of Marion in that extraor- pein manner. \ “Here’s a bit of news ‘for you,” a the night clerk of the hotel, as he came in with a telegram. Dr. Brookes tore it open, and read it aloud. “Have reason to think Miss Marlowe and Mrs. Canton left camp together.” _ The telegram was signed by the colonel of the garrison. “Then she is safe!’ cried Miss Allyn, clap- ping her*hands together, “but it is strange she did not come right here. It is not like our Marion to keep us guessing.” Before any one could reply an anX1OUS @X- ; pression overspread her feattires. “IT understand it!” she exclaimed, Hieaie ‘Marion was injured, and the Cantons found her and hurried her*to the city. Now, why should they do that when there is a hospital at the barracks and no end of physicians and surgeons there who could have attended her?” “T don’t know why they did it, but I will go and see,” said Dr. Brookes, sternly. “I'll get Canton’s address from the directory, and then'call a cab. You go to your rooms, and I'll report the minute I find her.” He started for the office, but met the night clerk in the doorway. ; “Where does Artemas V. Canton live?” he asked, abruptly. ’ There was not a gleam of mirth upon the clerk’s honest features, but his answer made even Miss Allyn gasp with surprise. “He has three homes. Which do you mean?” he asked, with perfect innocence. - “Great Czasar’s ghost!” murmured Miss Ellis, in a shocked voice. “Give me the legal one, if he has one,” said Dr. Brookes. “The one where you are most apt to find him,” said Miss Allyn, recovering her voice The clerk bowed politely as he mentioned the address. “That is his first wife’s home,” he said, bv way of explanation, “The heathen!” muttered Miss Ellis again, but the doctor had started, Half way to the door he suddenly turned and came back to the office to get the two other addresses. “Well, if that doesn’t beat the Dutch!” Comicbooks.com 5c ud
