The hat never changed its position. He had arranged the trunks in the form of a crescent, with the opening towards the lake. The most-dangerous part of Joe’s journey, was the crossing of the open space between the woods and the water. To do this he was obliged to lie flat on his face, and wig- gle along like a snake. We almost held our breaths until the feat was accomplished, and he disappeared over the bank, which was about four feet high. Now that he was out of our sight our anx- iety increased and I suppose our antics were ludicrous. Then Joe’s head bobbed up above the bank behind the breastworks. He arose slowly to his feet.
