The ground should be free from rocks and stones. After ploughing the soil it should be made as fine as possible. Beds should then be made, six inches high and three feet apart, and the seeds planted six inches ‘apart and three-quarters of an inch deep. Trees planted this far apart yield better than trees planted closer. The rows are usually pegged out, and pieces of red cloth are laid where holes are to be dug. These holes should be eighteen inches wide and eighteen inches deep, and should remain open as long as possible, and only filled in a week or so before planting the trees.
