Then I unlocked it and cut out of the room, and down stairs tu the street door. More haste less speed. Ef I hadn’t been so fast I’d have been surer. Half way down I tumbled and came near breaking my neck. The noise I made brought somebody to the door of the front room. ‘The lady of the house, I calkerlated, by her voice. She called out ‘‘Who’s there?” three times ; but you may bet I didn’t answer.
