When Monday came I was in dretful tribbilation, and was settin’ by the windy when ma cum in, and says she: ‘‘Chat, Miss Knockternal has been a speakin’ o’ some mitts youre knittin’ fur her. I hain’t seen ’em,” ‘“They hain’t commenced,” sez I. ~ Well, goodness knows, Id as lief knit as not, and I stuck my hand in my pocket, and out I fetches the odd mit fur a pattern. It felt kinder hard, and I undone it in a hurry. Land alive! ’Twarn’t the mit, ‘twas the two hearts united by blue ribbon and the motto, I'd gin him the mitten by mistake, and if ever a girl felt distracted I did. _ Few days arter 1 gota note. It run this way: ‘“Miss GRINDER: You needn't have took the trouble to give me the mitten before lasked you The lady I alluded to was Miss Grampkins, and her sentiments zs reciprocal. I don’t send the mitten back because ‘taint likely you'll ever have occa- sion for it, and subscribe myself, ‘‘Yours, respectfully, Mozart JENKS. ““P. S.—l’'m to be married Thursday. 1 Hig [ie Of course I knowed ’twas all out of spite. He hadn't had no thought before of Miss Grampkins. But the milk was spilt, and that’s the last of it. So as I hain’t seen Mozart’s equal since, I remain in singular blessedness to this day, and don’t suppose Mozart knows howt I only gave him the mitten by mistake. Eomicboo <S €O
