The soldiers raised their muskets to fire upon the figure on the balcony, but Count Lemours, flinging himself between, thundered out: “No, the duel was a fair one.”’ “Mille tonnerres! Would you save a heretic?” shrieked Goujon. ‘“ Death to the Huguenot!” And snatching an arquebuse from one of the soldiers, he levelled it and fired.
