Already he had stood in the hall pounding and calling for what seemed an age to him. There was something very strange about allthis. Strange that Ellen, expecting him back directly, should lock the door on the inside. The only light was the dim glow of the coals in the grate, which told him nothing. He blindly groped his way to the centre-table, where he knew there was a match-safe. In the obscurity he struck against a chair and overturned it.
