I have fooled you to the top of your bent, equally as I fooled your son.”’ ‘‘Isabel!’’ he gasped, in abject fear. ‘‘Die! you maudlin old idiot!”’ Jabez Alston made a dive for the portieres, justas a bullet was embedded in the wall, and plunged into the arms of his son. With a bound, Edward Hawley reached the side of the frenzied woman and knocked the pistol from her hand.
