Charles Armand, Despard no longer, by the aid of the great wealth which was his, and which he had converted into jewels before his condemnation in France, had been enabled to perform well his work in Montreal. It had come to a happy fruition. In a few days there was a double wedding at the cathedral. The principal officers of the provincial portion of the army attended, and many of the regulars, to attest the high regard in which they held the whilom spies, Despard and Wilton. Two more beautiful brides had never stepped over the mar- ble floors. The party returned to Anselmo’s house, where the marriage- ' feast was given.
