MARK’S ABBEY. : 9 side, She had scarcely been there two minutes when the light grew stronger, and revealed to her astonished gaze, a tall, awd apparently, female figure, cled in long flowing garments of white, and bearing a lamp in ber hand. With difficulty repressing a scream, Angelina watched the actions of the sup- posed phantom, which having stood for a few seconde at the entrance of the cavern, and appearing to gazé vacantly around, uttered a deep sigh, and ad- vanced to the centre of the outer cavern with noiseless footeteps, where, raising the lamp above her head, the light streamed full upon the countenance of our heroine, and uttering a shriek, the light was extinguished, and the apparent spectre vanished. Bound up to a pitch of desperate resolution to solve this mye- tery, the mai8en sprang forward towards the nerrow cavern, but struck her head violently against the.rock, and fell prostrate to the earth, stunned, and insensible. How long she had remained in this state, she had nu means of judging, but when she recovered her senses, the storm had subsided. The roaring of the thunder was hushed, the rain had ceased to pour, and the vivid lightning no longer darted its forked fury. She had scarcely reached the outside of the cavern, whena soft train of plaintive music vibrated on her ears, and arrested ‘her footsteps. It was the melodious tones of a flute playing s0 skilfully, that it rapt her soul in admiration and surprise. She looked around for the minstrel, bat altheugh the moon was riding proudly, and undimmed by the smallest speck, © she could not discover a human being. Atlength the music ceased, andshe was aroused by a gentle sigh, which seemed to proceed from some person near her.
