A Fair Fraud 107 Hetty’s storm-tossed breast——an element stronger and subiler than all else—that pulled her first one way and then the other. ‘It would be a shameful thing to do!’ she cried out to herself at one moment, whilst almost immediately she added, ‘But what a temptation it is! what an overwhelming temptation |’ For it was not only the worldly advantages of the prospect that allured her; the social safety, the freedom from the moral obliquity which in her present circumstances continued to drag her back into the slough of her parents’ smitched and damaged lives. Greatly as she longed to shake herself clear of all this and to beyin a new and better existence, it was not because of these thing's that she clung with feverish strength to a hope she knew she must eventually abandon. It was Kenneth Drury himself who was the greatest difficulty of all in her difficult path. For she knew that she had won his heart and she loved him! She had not been at all sure of him when she had first come down to stay at Crovkthorpe. She had known him to be a flirt, and she had mistrusted his admiration, and had even sus- pected that his real heart might be in the keeping of the pretty girl who lived with his parents; but a few days of constant companion- GOMMGIOO <S (GO)
