He looked proud, satisfied, as he glanced at the cadets as if for fur- — ther orders. . But Fishcake and Nanny were busy with other matters just then. ; The landlord had grabbed up a long billy from a shelf, and he swung it out as he ran out. He narrowly missed Nanny’s head, and he did land a | sharp cut across Fishcake’s knuckles. “Sind I may never!” roared the Irishman, and leaped to the rescue. | “Drop that!” ordered a new, clear, ringing voice. “Clif!” marveled Nanny. ‘‘Why, are you here?” mouthed the lank plebe. “Do you hear me?” continued Clif Faraday—he it was, . the huddled pose in the corner chair magically changed, ay the enveloping coat thrown back. oe The popular cadet had emerged from covert the min- ute that blazing flag set his own ardor on frre. | He had dropped his “disguise” as he discerned the bel- ligerent tactics of the brawny landlord. That individual’s arm he now held powerless, and, his fingers pressing till the wrist bones cracked, he caused the fellow to drop his weapon. | “Don’t you take sides!” he warned the shrinking boni- face peremptorily ; “we want that man!” In the presence of three active, serious cadets and two capahle civilian helpers, the landlord subsided—cowed. The German was the happiest of the crowd. He sat squared across the counter, resuming a’‘munching on some free lunch he had put in his pocket. “T haf him—under!” he orinned. | “Tet him up,” ordered the Irishman. “And we'll use him up!” muttered Nanny, his little fists douhbline—his big damaged eve reminding him painfully. Rismarck got off the counter. Clif tipped it, and the s Trishman stood eager and longing, half stoonine “to give the snailnane a tap,” if the Snaniard made a rich Rut there was no rush, for there was no Snaniord. » “Tstcehw 1” roared the Irishman, staring, recoiling. ko “Wat:is dot?” ‘ ~ be ‘ _ > "~~ ae Para ‘ey . “4 a’ oe i . . ant shes a - < ‘< x2 vice okt : bn he roe 5 4 = . + AS Phy a a a ". a a> A ; ot : ‘ A — > ey, ne, - hd A i.
