Mr. Reuben Sassoon — Men of the Day No. 483
Leslie Ward · Vanity Fair, 20 September 1890
Leslie Ward ('Spy') depicts Reuben David Sassoon (1835–1905), scion of the Baghdad-born Bombay trading dynasty, seated in profile on a red velvet chair, white-gloved hands cradling what appears to be a small object of curiosity. The caption reads simply 'Mr Reuben Sassoon.' Ward's caricature leans into the conventions his era applied to Sephardi Jewish subjects: a pronounced, hooked nose and heavy dark beard rendered with exaggerated fidelity, signaling otherness even within a formal evening suit. Yet the composition also registers Sassoon's social arrival — the white gloves, boutonniere, and easy posture read as markers of accepted gentility. The plate acknowledges, with Vanity Fair's characteristic ambivalence, a man wealthy and connected enough to warrant satire, while the physiognomy quietly reminds Victorian readers of his origins.
