Men of the Day: The Vanity Fair Caricatures

'The Lord Mayor' — Reginald Hanson

Carlo Pellegrini · Vanity Fair, 13 November 1886

Signed Ape (Carlo Pellegrini), this chromolithograph caricatures Reginald Hanson, Lord Mayor of London, identified by the caption 'The Lord Mayor' at the foot of the plate. Pellegrini renders him in profile facing left — the classic Vanity Fair pose — dressed in a dark frock coat with hands thrust into pockets, projecting comfortable civic authority. The heavy walrus moustache and ruddy, thickened nose are the caricaturist's chosen targets, exaggerating a prosperous, well-fed Guildhall solidity. A mayoral chain of office gleams at his chest, the sole mark of rank against otherwise plain suiting.
