Leslie Ward ('Spy') renders Sir Frederick Joseph Bramwell — eminent Victorian engineer and veteran arbitrator in industrial disputes — as a rotund, white-maned figure in a dark frock coat, one hand resting proprietorially on his considerable belly. The caption 'An Arbitrator' is dryly apt: Bramwell was celebrated less as a practising engineer by 1892 than as the authoritative umpire of technical and commercial quarrels, a role his imposing physical presence clearly suited.
