'Pakky' — Harry Kent Paxton

Leslie Ward ('Spy') renders Harry Kent Paxton — nicknamed 'Pakky' — in the full uniform of late-Victorian masculine respectability: black frock coat, grey trousers, bow tie, watch-chain, and a silk top hat tilted with just enough confidence to signal self-satisfaction. Paxton holds what appears to be a monocle or small object in his right hand, left hand pocketed, stance wide and proprietorial. The face carries Ward's characteristic light mockery — a walrus moustache, flushed cheeks, and a slightly bulbous physique that gently punctures the subject's evident self-regard. No overt ethnic caricature is present. As Men of the Day No. 638, Paxton was clearly a figure of sufficient social currency to earn a plate, though history has not preserved him among the era's more celebrated names.
