Signed with the 'T' monogram of Théobald Chartran, this chromolithograph shows the Earl of Albemarle — soldier, memoirist, and witness to the retreat from Kabul — settled deep into a cushioned armchair, legs crossed, one hand loosely gripping what appears to be a book or card. His broad, balding head and side-whiskers are gently exaggerated in the Vanity Fair manner: portly, comfortable, faintly amused. The caption beneath reads "Waterloo", alluding to his father's presence at that battle and the family's Napoleonic-era military prestige. No ethnic caricature is present. The coronet vignette in the upper right quietly signals his earldom without requiring a word.
