Edward Gibson, 1st Baron Ashbourne — 'Dublin University'
Leslie Ward · Vanity Fair, 4 July 1885
Leslie Ward ('Spy') presents Edward Gibson — Privy Councillor, Queen's Counsel, and MP for Dublin University — in three-quarter profile, rendered in the magazine's characteristic chromolithograph style. Gibson stands in a dark double-breasted frock coat, white-haired and ruddy-faced, one hand tucked behind his back and the other drawn to his chest, projecting the composed authority of a senior Irish Unionist lawyer-politician. The caption 'Dublin University' identifies his constituency rather than his person, a Vanity Fair convention signalling insider readership. Appointed Lord Chancellor of Ireland that same year, Gibson was a pivotal Unionist voice resisting Home Rule. Ward's caricature exaggerates the long jaw and erect posture, but the treatment is respectful — no ethnic distortion, notable given contemporary British caricature's frequent mockery of Irish physiognomy as simian.
