Alan Stewart, 10th Earl of Galloway — 'Army Reorganisation'

Plate No. 222 in the Statesmen series, this chromolithograph by Melchiorre Delfico caricatures Alan Stewart, 10th Earl of Galloway (1835–1901), a Scottish peer and army reformer. The caption — "Army Reorganisation" — anchors him in the Cardwell reforms then reshaping the British military. Delfico renders Stewart in profile, his head inflated to comic proportion against a trim double-breasted frock coat and buff trousers, hands clasped behind his back in a posture of self-satisfied authority. The drooping moustache and rosy jowls are standard tools of the series: gentle social satire aimed at a readership that would recognise — and enjoy — the likeness. A coronet in the upper-right corner signals his rank.
